Dare to Dream: When Imagination Takes Flight

Dare to Dream: When Imagination Takes Flight

This past September, I found myself reading an article in the Triad Business Journal about Boom Supersonic’s Overture—a sleek, state-of-the-art aircraft being built right in my hometown of Greensboro, NC. The article issued a global call for artists to submit designs for the plane’s livery, the exterior artwork that would grace this modern marvel.

There was just one catch: the deadline was Monday, giving me only 48 hours to create something extraordinary. I could have easily brushed it off, overwhelmed by the thought of competing against artists from across the world. But here’s the thing about daring to dream—it’s not about guaranteeing success; it’s about believing in yourself enough to try. Little did I know that in a pool of over 1,000 entries, my hand-painted design would win the title of “Most Original.”

Three Lessons from Taking a Chance:

1. Dreams Demand Action, Not Just Inspiration
When I first read about the opportunity, I was filled with doubt. Could I even complete a design over the weekend, let alone stand out in a field of digital submissions? But dreams don’t manifest by waiting for the perfect moment; they require action, grit, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. I dove into the process, drawing on childhood memories of building model airplanes and envisioning flight. Those early passions gave me the fuel to create.

2. Originality Is Found in Being Yourself
While most entries leaned on digital tools, I took a different approach. I hand-painted my design, a modern reimagining of the American flag sweeping across the fuselage at Mach speed. I trusted my roots as a traditional artist, knowing that authenticity carries its own power. In today’s world, where technology often leads, my analog method stood out. It was a reminder that being yourself—your true self—can be your greatest advantage.

3. You Never Know Until You Try
There were moments I nearly gave up, convinced that my chances were slim. But I pushed forward anyway. Winning “Most Original” wasn’t just an honor; it became a powerful lesson that the real failure would have been not trying at all. Life rewards those willing to take the leap, even when the odds seem stacked against them.

The Power of Daring to Dream

When I received the email announcing my win, I was stunned. Competing on a global stage with artists from all over the world seemed like a long shot—but sometimes, daring to dream is all it takes to open doors you never imagined. My story is a testament to the idea that the smallest flicker of inspiration can become something extraordinary if you’re willing to act on it.

In my keynotes, I share this experience to remind others: dreams are not reserved for the few. They belong to anyone brave enough to believe in them and take that first step. So, dare yourself to dream—and let your imagination take flight.
