There's Treasure in Difficult Places: Lessons for Leaders
Every blank canvas presents both a challenge and an opportunity—a space where inspiration can either blossom or falter. As an artist, I’ve faced countless moments of frustration, nearly wiping away my work in defeat, only to return with a fresh perspective and find something extraordinary. Ralph Marston’s wisdom about seeking treasures in difficult places resonates with my journey as an artist and keynote speaker. Through my programs, I show association leaders and meeting planners how embracing discomfort and risk can unlock growth, innovation, and a deeper sense of purpose.
Discomfort Sparks Growth
"Go where you feel a little bit of discomfort. That’s where you’ll also feel energized to expand your perspective," writes Marston. In art, as in leadership, discomfort signals opportunity. Pushing through frustration in my creative process has often revealed insights I hadn’t seen before. In my programs, I help leaders recognize that stepping outside their comfort zones isn’t a setback—it’s a pathway to fresh ideas and renewed energy that can transform teams and organizations.
Risks Lead to Transformation
Taking risks—whether it’s bold changes to a painting or trying new approaches in leadership—is essential for growth. As Marston says, “Take a small risk and as you endure it, notice the way your confidence ramps up.” Risk-taking isn’t reckless; it’s necessary for moving beyond mediocrity. In my presentations, I encourage leaders to take calculated risks that lead to extraordinary outcomes, showing how embracing creativity can drive impactful decision-making.
Treasures Await in Challenges
Some of my most rewarding paintings have emerged from near failure, salvaged only through persistence and a willingness to reimagine my approach. Marston reminds us, “Great treasures await you in difficult places you’ve been hesitant to go.” Similarly, I guide leaders and planners to find opportunities in challenges, teaching them how to turn obstacles into moments of growth. This approach fosters resilience and adaptability, qualities every successful team needs.
In every program, I draw on my dual perspective as a professional artist and keynote speaker to deliver authentic, impactful messages. I inspire leaders to embrace discomfort, take risks, and discover untapped potential in their teams—helping them grow stronger and more effective in their roles.
The journey to success, whether on a canvas or in leadership, requires embracing discomfort, taking risks, and finding treasures in challenges. As Ralph Marston puts it, “Steadily, mindfully, teach yourself to navigate those places, and make the treasures your own.” Through my programs, I equip association leaders and meeting planners with the tools to lead boldly, inspire teams, and make a meaningful impact.
